Year-end greetings: a strategic exercise

Whether it’s to convey your future ambitions, or to express your gratitude for the past year, New Year’s greetings are a unique way to address your audience. We’d be surprised by the number of micro-decisions that need to be made: choosing and designing the medium, defining the recipients, writing the appropriate text. Season’s greetings are definitely a communication event!

So how do you turn these simple greetings into a meaningful message that will have the desired impact and be appreciated by your readers? Whatever the style or medium used, these wishes are an opportunity to recall the values you hold dear and for which you are committed. Here are a few keys to help you put the necessary care into it:

·        Define the list of 3

When giving a speech, focus on three elements that you want to convey, for example, a reminder of 3 special moments during the year (a highlight of the past year, a project that is currently on people’s minds, and a motivating ambition for the year to come).

In writing, you can use the list of three in the form of repetition, emphasizing a particular point: “I express my gratitude by saying: Thank you for your loyalty, thank you for your commitment, thank you for your support.”

·        Use rhetorical questions

These open-ended questions, which don’t really require an answer or are thought-provoking, also have their place in year-end greetings. For example, “How can we make 2023 a successful year?”. You can use them to engage your reader and share your thoughts with them.

·        Surprising Tease with a paradox

The paradox is a subtle way of making a mark, by raising a contradiction or putting two elements in opposition in order to bring out an unexpected nuance. It’s a way to make your audience think, an opportunity to inspire them. For example, “Creating a new company is not done in a day; you have to be patient and overcome one difficulty after another.

·        Use a mobilizing stirring concept

A metaphor, a quote, an image can be a mobilizing stirring concept that can be nestled in your message, to encourage your reader to broaden their vision and open their perspectives. For example, a metaphor can also highlight the importance of a message you want to convey. For example, to recall the values of innovation of a company positioning itself as a forerunner in its field, “let’s recall Henri-Frédéric Amiel who said that “To be on time in life, you have to be in advance”.

·        Express a concise and neat message

Effective New Year’s greetings are also distinguished by their form. They should be brief, but not sloppy. Although 4 or 5 lines are enough, give yourself the time to think about the message you want to convey, with the right words and tone. The key is to remain sincere and authentic, and to end your message on a positive and motivating note.
